In 2010 I was running a web agency, and our paperwork had outgrown our tools. Quotes went out from one place, invoices chased clients from another, and nothing connected. Cloud invoicing was new, and every app I tried came close without really fitting. I am a designer and a hopeless perfectionist, so I set out to build the one I wanted. It took twelve attempts before it felt right, and I used it every day to run my own agency. Signups were slow for the first two months. Then our first customer arrived: Simon, a chauffeur in the UK. That was when I realised Billbooks was not just for agencies. Today it is used by freelancers and small businesses in more than 30 countries, from piano teachers in Hollywood to production houses and truck leasing firms. My belief has not changed: software is about simplified logic and common sense. Billbooks is built by a small team in Sydney and Pune, and this year we added bank reconciliation, a scheduler that turns calendar events into invoices, and business insights.
