If i use my own OpenAI API Key, does that kick in after i have consumed my allotted monthly message credits, or is it immediately charged to my API? Thank you!

I'm considering purchasing plan 3, but I have some questions before buying, here they are:
1) 1 message credit should correspond to only the message sent by the bot. If 1 credit is charged for a user message and 1 credit for a bot message, the message count will quickly deplete even on plan 3. And I didn't understand how to use BYOK to have unlimited messages? Is there any tutorial on this?
