Q: Hi, there I've just purchased two codes and am excited to get started!

A few questions:

1. I'm quite concerned about the recording limitations. My primary use-case is as a 1:1 coach for breathwork, etc. I could easily need to record hours and hours of sessions every week for my clients. At the pay as you go price for extra hours, Butter could quickly become more expensive than Zoom! Are you listening to all the requests to enable simple local recordings? Or is there a way to pay a low set fee and raise the cap of online recordings?

2. If I want to create an account for my wife (she has a separate business), should I use the other code with a separate account, or add it to my current account and just create a separate workspace for my wife?

3. If, in future, I want to host workshops with more than 30 people, what are the options for doing that, and how much would it cost as an LTD customer?

Thank you, very impressed so far overall!

A: Hey Nathan! Thanks for the purchase and the lovely words!

1. Recording:
I hear ya.

There are currently three ways to increase recording limits:
1) Stacking (it's 90 minutes per user pooled for the workspace - even if you only need one user in the workspace, stacking "random" users will allow you to surpass those limits)
2) Paying $1/hour extra recording
3) Upgrading to one of our paid plans that have more recording - we offer discounts for AppSumo users there

Our paid plans (Starter, Pro, Legend - https://www.butter.us/pricing) were structured partially around the need for recording use. The Starter plan has 3 hours - and the Pro plan has 20 hours. Huge increase - but also meant for those that were using Butter professionally on more frequent scale.

Because recordings are really expensive for us, we weren't able to offer them unlimited (it's not the storage, it's the act of recording that's expensive).

Local recordings are not an option - we tested it and users hated it (CPU intensive, captured private notes because it was a screen recording, showed private DMs, showed Butter host interface which confused viewers of recordings).

Recordings is something that we're reviewing on how we can do them on a more cost efficient basis though. And if you really want local recordings, there are many ways to simply do screen capture.

Hope this explains our rationale a bit!

2. Second account:
Yeah, would probably make sense to make two separate workspaces for this, if it's two separate businesses. Depends a bit on how separate it is.

If you do that, I'd recommend you to just create the workspace with your wife's email and then apply the code. If you encounter any issues, just ping us at friends@butter.us!

3. Larger sessions:
For now, we offer discounts on our priced plans (that you can see here: https://butter.us/pricing):
Starter, monthly: $12 ($19 normal) - 35% discount
Pro, monthly: $27 ($34 normal) - 20% discount
Legend, monthly: $58 ($69 normal) - 16% discount
Starter, annual: $111 ($171 normal) - 35% discount
Pro, annual: $246 ($306 normal) - 20% discount
Legend, annual: $521 ($612 normal) - 16% discount

We're also considering more of a "pay-as-you-go" option on increasing limits

Jakob, I'm trying to figure this out for my use case. I was considering local recording, but my own screen recording would be no different from what you describe, showing my interface and private messages.

Why would it not be possible to have local recordings look similar to cloud recordings, if we're talking about an integrated local recording option? I believe Zoom does exactly this, doesn't it? Is that something that's being considered or is the local recording feature completely off the table now?

Alternatively, would it be an option to add the popout option to more buttons and toolbars? Or perhaps have an entirely separate control window that we could move to a second monitor, or simply outside of a recording area?

Would I otherwise have to run a second instance of Butter as an attendee and record that? Perhaps from a separate computer? I'm a bit worried about the quality of the recording with that method though.

Completely understand the pricing for cloud recordings, don't get me wrong, but I don't think that'd work for the workshops my team does. We're talking about 6-8h workshops, sometimes multiple days, but with relatively small groups.

@HHF:

Trust me, we've explored A LOT of different options for recordings.

We are actively exploring other recording methods - I don't think we'll ever offer local recordings though.

Zoom just captures video/audio streams - Butter needs to capture everything that happens in the session incl. integrations (e.g. Miro, Mural, embeds) and tools. Much more difficult than the Zoom style.

And hate to be that guy, but I understand that the AppSumo offer might not work for you - but we DO have a Pro plan that would fit your needs :-)

Haha no worries, I'm already 7 codes in and cancelled my Zoom subscription. I'll make it work. Just need to figure out what the best solution would be in this case. And since there are probably others here in similar situations I figured I'd discuss it here in case it helps anyone else.

Once the workshops bring in enough for the higher subscription I'll gladly pay for cloud recordings.

I'll see how it runs and records as an attendee. In the end, if that attendee isn't participating or doing anything, it's nothing but video and audio anyway I suppose. If that runs smooth enough, a capture card on a separate laptop or computer might be all that's required.

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to answer all my questions. Love Butter so far, otherwise I wouldn't be so hell-bent on making this work.
