From 4 to 5 Stars: Why?
I was initially leaning toward giving Butter 4 stars, but after using it for about 30 minutes, I decided to give it 5 stars. Let me explain why.
First of all, I’m a Zoom user and I found that Butter is a well-designed application that can help us organize our meetings. It has a lot of nifty features and yet a tasteful and simple design. One doesn’t get overwhelmed. The design is pretty intuitive and nice-looking. Also, all the basics work pretty well.
However, there are some cons that made me hesitate to give it 5 stars at first. For example, when I tried to share my screen within the application browser, the window that displayed my face became a bit wonky and slow. But after downloading their Windows app, everything worked smoothly like butter. The only concern is whether participants on the other end will also have to download the app in order to experience smooth movement while sharing the screen.
Also, after using the Windows app for about 30 minutes, I noticed my laptop fan kicked in, indicating that it was heated up. I’m not 100% sure if it’s due to using the Butter App or for some other reason.
Another drawback is that when I see my face on Butter, it shows me just the way I look in person. What a disappointment! Zoom, on the other hand, makes me look MUCH better. Now, I know that many of you Sumolings might be blessed with good looks, so this may not bother you. But for someone like me who’s less than thrilled with their appearance, I like it when Zoom makes me look younger and less wrinkled. Unfortunately, there are many insecure people like me who may not leave Zoom because they like seeing themselves without wrinkles. We may not admit it explicitly, but subconsciously we love the way we look in Zoom.
Finally, I couldn’t figure out how to turn on full-screen mode in Butter. I’m not even sure if it has a full-screen mode. But despite these issues, I still ended up giving Butter 5 stars. Why? Because it’s a well-designed application that can help me stay organized. It has many short YouTube videos to help me figure things out, and I even booked an orientation session with them. It seems like they have a solid team behind this app. For $49, it’s certainly a great deal for me. But will I pay them a monthly fee and leave Zoom? Well, I’m not quite sure about that yet :)

May 9, 2024Appreciate all the kind words!
Browser vs. App:
App is 30-40% better - but browser DOES depend a lot on the local browser setup. We’re all the time working on making butter smoother and softer, so most participants will find it fine!
Facial touchup:
Yeah, it’s not something we have built in at the moment, but will get to one day :-) We see people using external virtual cams that does this super well though!
Full screen mode:
I guess you mean when you’re sharing screen or an app? We have a “Focus mode”, which you can access by clicking the small lightning on the top right of the app that’s running in Butter
Hope this helps! And don’t hesitate to drop questions on friends@butter.us!
