I found the company's rationale for the cost of the AppSumo deal perfectly sane and defensible. 5 codes invested in now will save you many thousands over a LTD deal if you paid for this elsewhere.

Sure, they structured the deal to entice us to buy five codes, but I cannot blame them for that when their bandwidth costs are going to be significant for the portion of those who use the service actively.

In the end, they might just break even on this deal, because on balance not everyone will max out their services, but it gives them an infusion of cash to grow the business which is what I want so they stick around. It all seems very fair to me so I don't understand the discontent of so many.

I do consider this one of primary examples among the deals I've purchased where my investment in the company's future is and should be mutually beneficial.
