Q: International usage and server quality

Hi Rick. At the moment I'm in South Africa and am experiencing a bit of quality issues (pixelation / visual quality). Not sure if it's a local network issue, because Apple Facetime quality is fine. Just wanted to ask if the servers you're using should provide a high quality experience no matter the location?

A: My guess is you're having some local packet loss but qpple facetime is doing a better job dealing with it. We use "forward error correction" on the audio stream to prevent that from breaking up with packet loss. We may need to do the same for video, even though that increases bandwidth needs 30%

We will be building out worldwide over time as we grow.

Thanks, just to clarify, is it mainly the U.S. and Europe that can expect the best quality connection at the moment due to your current infrastructure?

Yes, please... Our entire user base is in the "Global South" (online learning platform for people working with street children), and frequently face rather/very poor internet quality... I just purchased...

We do meetings all over the world. The weak link is not the server location these days. The weak link is almost always the cellular and/or wifi connection.

That's because an extra 100ms of latency doesn't kill live video meetings, packet loss kills live video meetings.

I encourage you to try it in real-world conditions and then make the right decision for you.
