Highly confusing and not intuitive
For me the software doesn't hold true to what was advertised here on appsumo.
For me as a small business owner it is super confusing.
I was under the impression that it guides me through the creation of customer personas, messaging, and finally creating a step by step marketing plan.
But no.
You log in, it asks for your business mission, business values and stuff I don't know how to define.
Yes it provides templates for of that, but they don't really resonate with me. My business values are "getting customers", "provide value to customers" and "make money".
Values such as diversity and inclusion are simply somewhere out there.
And to make things worse it asks me to define that stuff WITHOUT giving proper instructions.
I would liked it to ask simple questions like
- "what do you sell?",
- "what's your elevator pitch?",
- "how much does your product/service cost?",
- "who do you think will profit the most from your product/service?",
- "do you have existing customers?",
- "do you have reviews of existing customers?", and then have the AI tell me what to do next.
What the software is asking is already confusing. I got the software because I don't know who my ideal customer is, I'm not sure what my business values should be.
I was under the impression that during the onboarding I would be guided through a series of simple questions that a small business owner can simply answer (it's even shown in of the youtube videos, but I never went through a guided onboarding sequence, nor can I find it in the dashboard https://youtu.be/dUGyNlz2lWA?si=atTn38U2m9PySf-c).
But instead it asks these super high level questions.
- Brand Values: Communicate the essence, character, and commitment of your business to your clients. (What? I want to get customers, provide value and make money)
- Mission: Identify your unique purpose, goals, and values to potential clients. (Uhm.. make money?)
- Goals: Aspirational goals guiding this business. (Aspirational goals? Dude I want to make money. And where is the difference between mission and goals?)
Sure, I could go to Google and research what the exact difference between brand values, mission statement and goals are but this is what I paid the software for.. at least I thought..)
Confusion level 50%. (Is this software what I thought it was? Am I giving the right input? Do I get usable results with my input or will I destroy my marketing for the next 3-6 months because I couldn't give proper input?)
So I put in what I know and HOPE that it gives the software enough to make sense of my business, off to the next step: customer personas.
It asks me this:
- Photo
- Name
- Age
- Gender
- Primary Need
Like dude, WHAT? This is what I need to know from you! This is why I hired a CMO (I mean I got the AI version of the digital CMO, right?)
Ok so I guess my way through it.
Confusion level 80% (How can the CMO give me proper advice if my input is not on point? And why doesn't it explain to me what it is asking? Do I need to give exact input and adjust later? Will this pave the road for another 3-6 months of marketing failure?)
Ok I answer the questions:
- Photo: random photo of a 30 year old white dude
- Name: Andreas
- Age: 30
- Gender: Male
- Primary Need: "My service" (Is this the third time I am giving this info here?)
Next step: Products / Services
Description:
"Aim to describe your product or service in terms of the value it creates for your customers. This helps you leverage your marketing communications to convince consumers that you are the right choice. Get started by clicking Add, or choose a Template above." (Wow I can do that 😍)
Confusion level: 75%
Ok cool, from here on the following answer are simpler (What's your Linkedin? Do you have a website? What kind of posts do you want to publish on Linkedin?)
Cool
What's next?
Ah I see: calendar, actions, content etc.
What? It wants these infos from? Like what I want to write about? Like dude, that's what I need to know from you! Please! Tell me what I need to write about! Please tell me who I'm writing for! That's what I'm paying you for!
Confusion level: 99%
Confidence level: 1%
I gave up at this point.
I came to realize the name 'My Digital CMO' is where my entire confusion came from.
Instead of this being my CMO that gives me tasks to execute, it gives me a dashboard that I can put in my assets of which I have to create 90% myself (and it doesn't give simple instructions to do so).
It doesn't ask me simple questions about and it doesn't give me customer personas, a marketing message, post ideas, post schedule calendar etc.
This is more for CMO's that are looking for a ready set up project management surface.
It's either this or I completely missed important info somewhere. I checked the website for instructions 🤦♂️ not helpful (https://mydigitalcmo.io/how-it-works)
I also checked the help resource from the dashboard... Instead of giving instructions and offering help or clarifying what specifically a mission statement is, it gives step by step instructions on how to click buttons (For example "if you want to set up customer personas click here, here and then here) 😂😂 Like dude, what? On one hand you're asking super high level information, and then on the other hand you provide instructions for monkeys.
Please be advised:
I'm not hating on your product 🙏❤️
I think the Appsumo listing does simply not align with the product (at least not for me).
I want to answer a few questions that my average joe business owner can comprehend without a marketing degree and then receive instructions and actions.
I don't know how to define a mission, or values, or define a target persona. I have never done this. And I would expect a CMO to create all this for me. Either this or I am highly confused by what a CMO does.
