Q: Silly question: does each client have to download the app and login into it or can communication occur otherwise?

Not at all a silly question. Access to qwil is for both staff and clients either on mobile, browser or desktop. Usually users will use mobile and desktop as that is the best experience.
We are a secure application and for that you need to 1. know everyone is who they say they are at all times (so you invite and then it is 2FA on each device) and 2. Encryption. So if you are going to use a communication platform and drag and drop sensitive info or trade etc, you don't want to have to sent it password protected or like banks do...call you up to verify your "special code".
For users, it takes 30 seconds on mobile to accept the invitation and be on. It may be small initial friction but compensated by the fact you can then freely engage in your branded space knowing the security and compliance has been taken care of. It is also more professional.
