Close to great but some major limitations for now
Overall I like RankTracker but it currently has some major limitations (mostly in terms of data) which if the developers can overcome, at a reasonable cost, would make this a great tool capable of competing with some of the bigger players in this space.
At the moment, it's not good enough to be a serious contender to the likes of UberSuggest or Mangools (let alone Ahrefs/SEMrush) but it definitely could be, so it's a buy and hold for me to see if they address the main areas of weakness.
Some clarifiers:
- Although it's called RankTracker it is actually a full-blown keyword research tool that does a lot more than just rank tracking
- It is obvious that in order to enhance the data provided (see below for what I mean) the developers are going to have to introduce some paid addons and they have been upfront about this in the FB group. This is fine with me, realistically they'd go bankrupt if they didn't.
Pros:
- I use Ahrefs for work and RankTracker has definitely borrowed a lot from how that works (so the learning curve for me was pretty much zero). As a result it's well thought out in terms of UI
- The UI is nice and clean and most things work pretty fast (with some exceptions)
- The core functionality most people need is there, it's really just the data provided that is limiting it
- The developers seem pretty keen to improve the tool based on feedback (I'm on the FB group) and they have said they are working on improving/fixing most of the cons I have mentioned below
- They are based in the UK, as am I, so I want them to do well
Cons:
- When looking at a competitors site to see what KWs they rank for, RankTracker only brings back a max of 100 Kws and it's done alphabetically i.e. if it's a big site you'll get 100 Kws all starting with the letter 'a'. This makes this feature useless when analysing anything but small sites
- You cannot see a competitors top performing pages
- Competitor research capabilities are pretty weak full stop, so if scalping is an SEO tactic you use, RankTracker definitely won't cut it for you at the moment
- You do not get to see the keyword difficulty score for all returned results, you have to click on each result to get the KD one by one
- The number of results returned based on a keyword lookup is not bad but way less than you get from something like Ahrefs
- The Website audit tool needs some serious work, it reports lots of false negatives
- Could do with a few more filtering options in the KW reports e.g. 'Contains/Does not Contain' etc.
- No backlink analysis capability
- A few features are slow e.g. showing the top 10 SERPs for a given KW takes a fair while to load
