From Lastpass to Roboform

Here's my take on switching from Lastpass to Roboform.

tl;dr Uncomfortable to use and not as seamless as Lastpass. Web plugins aren't very feature rich and requires you use the desktop tool which is clunky.

So, I've been using Lastpass heavily for 1 year. Before that, I was all about saving my data on spreadsheets *slaps forehead*.

I decided to take advantage of this deal because I wanted a premium account. I currently have a premium account on Lastpass after referring dozens of people, but that's set to expire in 5 months (thinking ahead).

Unfortunately, coming from Lastpass, Roboform isn't very easy to use. Here are 5 examples:

- With Lastpass, you can go to a website and a little dropdown appears next to your username and password fields. You can then click on your account and it will autofill. Not so with RoboForm. You must always click on the plugin and then select the password.

- Sometimes I just want to copy/paste my password. With Lastpass, I can click on the Chrome extension, find the site and in one click have my password. Unfortunately with RoboForm, you have to leave the browser and get into the Roboform program, search for your account and then copy/paste it.

- Occasionally, I have multiple accounts for a website, like Google. With Lastpass, renaming them so I can quickly identify which is which is super easy in both the web plugins and on the website. With Roboform, you cannot rename account data unless you're on the desktop tool or you specifically login to the clunky website manager. And then renaming isn't available by clicking on your password. Renaming is a hidden feature available only by right-clicking on an item.

- That brings me to the online website manager. Lastpass' site has its flaws, and it's UI could use a few touch-ups. But Roboform's site looks like it's from the Myspace era. It is not intuitive at all.

- I have hundreds of usernames and passwords saved into Lastpass. Almost all of them have been organized into categories. When I export/import them into Roboform, that organization didn't transfer over. Fine, not anyone's fault.

As I began re-categorizing I found that once again, you can only do this on the web manager or on the desktop app. Both were so clunky and annoying. You can't select a group of them, right-click and drop them into your folder. You have to click and then click-drag them up. Sometimes the folders won't accept your files and then you have to do that again, and again, and again...

To top that off, creating a new folder is a pain. You have to go to the navigation bar at the top of your screen > file > new > new folder.

On the plus side,

+ You get premium features that are only available with a monthly subscription.

+ You also get to use software that has proven secure for almost 20 years!

Despite all of these UI annoyances, the software works. It's just a UI problem. I'm going to keep Lastpass and Roboform and hope Roboform updates their UI.
