From Lastpass to Roboforms... a comparison
As a longtime Lastpass user, I saw this deal in Briefcase and thought I'd give it a quick spin to see how it compares.
First the pros of this deal.
Roboforms, like Lastpass is a well-respected, proven password manager and at 5 users for $49 life, it stacks up well enough against Lastpass' $48 per year for a 6 license (the family pack offering). The two services do more or less exactly the same thing: they let you set different passwords over every different service you have, which dramatically improved your security footprint. Of course, you need to TRUST that Roboforms and Lastpass are secure in their own right... but that's a risk I can take. (Though I do recommend keeping financial logins off these services, just in case.)
Now the cons
I find Robopass less user friendly than Lastpass. For example, Lastpass is very good at understanding which page you are viewing and offering an in-field dropdown list of automated fill options, while Robopass requires you to manually hit the RoboForm icon in your browser menu, then hunt down the appropriate fill. Sure, it's only a few extra clicks, but it's still user intervention that is not really needed.
Lastpass also stores a lot more 'types' of information in a more 'obvious way.' For example, it allows you to store information on software purchases (such as license keys, order details, etc.) which is needed when you need to get upgrades or customer support.
In contrast, Roboforms has better 'personal details' management when compared to Lastpass.
However, since both applications have 'secure notes' you can really store any information you want in either application.
The biggest drawback for me is Roboforms rather cumbersome Windows client. While Lastpass is web-based, Roboforms also has a Windows client which pops up when needed. I know some folks like this client, but I really just want Chrome to be my main interface... it's a more consistent approach.
So... which service is best?
If you already have Lastpass, I don't think the effort to migrate to Roboforms (even with the export / import process) is worth the effort of the move. I mean, we are only talking a few bucks a year here. And the slightly clunkier interface when compared to Lastpass will not impress.
However, if you and your team are not yet using a password manager, this deal is a no-brainer. The shortcomings in the interface are not really terrible: just slightly less than that of Lastpass (and that may be because I'm just more use to Lastpass).
So if you are new to password management, grab this deal for Roboforms and you'll improve your team's digital security significantly.
