Two things shipped today. Both have been living in a dev environment for months, and today they finally got to leave the house. This email runs a little long because I could not pick which one to lead with.

1. There is an AI Chat Agent in your sheet now

Open the sidebar, type what you want in plain English, and it does the work. Not in a chat window you copy from. In your actual cells. It reads your sheet, writes cells and formulas, builds charts and pivot tables, formats, sorts, dedupes, and scrapes the web when it needs data you do not have yet. Forty-two different things it can do to a sheet, and you never have to learn the name of any of them.

Here is a real session. Pokemon cards, because I am a serious businessman:

“I want to find the last 30 days of eBay sold listings for each of the Pokemon cards in this sheet.”

It read the card names out of column A, figured out this was an eBay sold-listings job, told me what it would cost, waited for me to say yes, then wrote 40 rows of real sold prices into new tabs. Total effort on my end: one sentence and one click.

It asks before it writes to your sheet or spends credits, so it cannot run up a bill or wreck a tab behind your back. Reading and analyzing are instant and free to ask about. Go ahead and ask it which rows look like duplicates. It is weirdly good at that.

Where to find it: in any Google Sheet, go to Extensions → SheetMagic → Open AI Chat. If SheetMagic is already installed, it is there right now. Nothing to update.

2. 41 new scraping custom functions

This one is for the formula people, and I know a lot of you are formula people. The agent has its own toolkit and does its own scraping. These are separate: plain formulas you type into a cell, drag down a thousand rows, and go get a coffee. Nothing beats that when you know exactly what you want, and I am not going to pretend otherwise just because we built a shiny thing.

It is the biggest expansion of the library we have ever done:

• Google (11) search, news, maps, map reviews, trends, shopping, flights, hotels, Play Store reviews, Ads Transparency

• Social (6) Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, X, Facebook posts and ads

• Jobs and leads (5) Indeed, job search, lead finder, contact info, email validation

• Commerce (3) eBay sold comps, TCG card prices, Booking.com reviews

• Research (3) SimilarWeb, Wikipedia, full-site crawl

• YouTube (2) search and full video transcripts

• Real estate (2) Zillow search and property detail, Zestimate included

Every one of them is a formula. =TRUSTPILOT("monday​.com") and you have reviews with a TrustScore on every row. The full list with examples is at sheetmagic.ai/features/custom-functions.

Ask the agent something ugly and see what happens. If it does something dumb, send me a note. If it does something great, also send me a note. I read every one of these and I could use the serotonin.

We have some fantastic news this week! SheetMagic v1.4 is now available & packed with some awesome updates!

We added a few new functions, =ailong() and =gpt4long(). The regular =ai() and =gpt4() functions still work, but if you're doing longer prompts or doing a bulk job, you'll want to use the "long" functions for a more reliable experience!

What do these new features allow you to do?

💪 Better support for bulk processing

In the last version, SheetMagic would have trouble processing bulk requests of 50+ AI responses, but that has all changed now! You can now process in bulk without having any issues using the new =ailong() function! It takes a bit longer for each response to come back, but it is much more reliable!

↪️ Ability to bypass 30 second timeout limitation

This is a HUGE update! Beforehand, you were limited to 30 seconds of processing time (meaning longer AI responses would just give you an error), but now you can get long prompts & answers back from AI without any issues. Use the new =ailong() function to get this functionality. It will take slightly longer, but it will get the job done for you.

🖥️ Background processing

Open tabs? Who needs 'em! No need to keep your sheet open if you're doing a bulk job with the =ailong() function. Exit out and come back later and the data will be there :)

✔️ Other small features

• We've added support for these two models: GPT-3.5-turbo 16k and GPT-4 32k
• Added advanced settings to let you toggle the maximum tokens and temperature!
• A backup way to add your API key if saving it is causing issues
• Bug fixes & quality of life improvements

What is coming next for SheetMagic?

Next release will be a big one: SheetMagic 2.0!

For SheetMagic 2.0, we will be releasing an official extension with Google with better user management. This will allow you to use SheetMagic on any Google Sheet without having to make a copy of the original sheet every time and will allow for proper user management.

When we do that we'll likely be increasing pricing on AppSumo. You'll be grandfathered in, so if you want unlimited users now, I'd recommend upgrading before we increase pricing.
