Some bugs and needed features, but a very useful app in the end.
First of all, Speech To Note works well. It grabs your crazy whirlwind of spoken thoughts and turns them into coherent messages. But the app can also be clunky, has multiple small annoying glitches, and lacks additional functionality that I believe it needs. This is why 3 Tacos is the correct rating at its given price (for now).
Important Note: A new mobile app experience is projected to be released sometime around the end of 2024, which could affect this rating. However, I'm provided feedback based on what I see now.
Pros:
- When it records your voice, it provides both a 1 to 1 transcription and an altered version. And it does this quickly.
- The UI is beautifully designed, and from their history/experience, the mobile app will be beautiful and simple as well.
- As many people have said, the different types of notes it provides are really good, unique, useful, and creative. It's very easy to to see how this app fits into your workflow.
Cons:
- Web app (for now). Your screen turns off, the recording stops. This is a huge bummer for wanting to take voice notes while driving or working.
- There are a handful of little glitches and bugs. Nothing that breaks the experience, but a lot of small annoyances add up to diminish the experience.
- Some of the prompts, or note format styles are heavy-handed. I wish we had some granular control to dial them back a bit.
- It lacks solid in-app editing tools, requiring another app to be implemented into your workflow.
- Currently, there's very little note organization. But this is in development. So we'll see what they come up with.
Suggestions:
- A toggle for how heavily a chosen note format/style reshapes the original transcription would be immensely valuable. Setting to a Small, Normal, or Heavy level of influence. Adding slight humor, rather than saturating your entire note with quirky catchphrases.
- AI Editing tools such as selecting a single paragraph and re-writing it in the same, or a different style/tone.
- An actual editor window in which you can make basic adjustments to your notes such as formatting.
- The ability to mix note formats/styles such as "Humorous + LinkedIn Post" or "Journalistic + YouTube Script"
Thoughts:
My personal feelings about Speech To Note are mixed for the time being. The functions of this app are VERY useful and practical in every-day life/work. This makes me want to wait and see how the mobile app turns out.
However, I also can't help but wonder if most of the functions of this app will soon be implemented directly into tools like Evernote, Apple Notes, Notion, Clickup, Gmail, Docs, Microsoft Office, Grammarly, etc. This could negate the need for a stand-alone tool like Speech To Note. I hope the Speech To Note team is able to develop enough tools + functions to prove its worth to subscribers. They're a very talented team. But I hope they can sustain viability long-term.
