The limits still apply even when you put OpenAI API key, the reason of the limits are due to our platform being in the middle and processing requests, saving messages, reserving storage in database and traffic on our infrastructure. In order to provide fair usage of our systems we apply such limits.

For characters we basically count the characters in the documents/resources you upload to your account, as for the messages, we only count messages sent by the user against the limit of your account.
