Great Concept, But the 180-Character Limit Makes It Unusable for Serious Hiring

I really wanted to like this platform, which is why I purchased it through AppSumo. Unfortunately, the 180-character limit for video interview questions completely undermines what should be one of its biggest strengths.

For organizations hiring experienced professionals, the best interview questions are often scenario-based and require context. We don't ask candidates generic questions like "Tell me about yourself." We ask realistic case studies that reveal how they think, prioritize, solve problems, and communicate. Those questions simply cannot be written in 180 characters.

The result is that you're forced to ask shallow questions that invite rehearsed, generic answers instead of evaluating real expertise. That defeats the entire purpose of using asynchronous video interviews as an early screening tool.

It feels like this limitation was designed around the simplest possible hiring workflows rather than the needs of companies hiring experienced, specialized talent.

If the platform allowed substantially longer prompts—or even attached text or documents for candidates to review before recording—it would be far more useful.

Until this limitation is addressed, I can't recommend it for organizations that rely on thoughtful, case-based interviewing.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback.

We'd like to clarify that the platform currently provides both a Question field (180 characters) and a Description field (up to 200 additional characters), allowing approximately 380 characters of total context for each interview question. For the vast majority of hiring use cases, this has proven to be more than sufficient. This approach was introduced after extensive feedback from customers and careful consideration of candidate experience and platform usability.

Our research and customer feedback showed that very long question prompts can negatively impact candidate engagement and completion rates. We must balance the needs of recruiters with the candidate experience. If there were no character limits, some interview creators might add extremely long questions and descriptions, making them difficult for candidates to read and understand. This can lead to a poorer candidate experience and increased interview drop-off rates.

For this reason, we separated the content into dedicated Question and Description fields and applied reasonable limits to both. Our goal is to provide enough context for meaningful assessments while keeping the interview experience clear, engaging, and candidate-friendly.

That said, your feedback is valuable, and we have shared it with our product team for further review as we continue improving the platform.

Thank you again for your honest feedback and for helping us make the platform better.

Best regards,
The XInterview Team
