Fast, flexible, and fully functional without the cloud
I have been using Amical since its beta phase. What sets it apart from the flood of recent dictation tools is its focus on power-user features and privacy. It is open source and supports local models, allowing for a completely offline workflow. The developers are even looking into bringing local models to mobile devices.
Amical's custom vocabulary handles unusual names, and its "snippets" feature replaces your standalone text expander tool. A magic word inserts boilerplate content of any length.
Amical figures out the language you speak and does a good job at it. Yet, you can also bypass auto-detection and store presets for languages you'll use for dictation. This will likely save a few tokens and help speed and accuracy.
Most comparable tools work in many languages, yet Amical even ads support for specific language subsets like Swiss German.
But not everything is perfect. On Windows, I ran into problems with certain hotkeys – causing text-insertion to be buggy. It's fixed now. If the network connection is unstable – which can happen where I live – Amical allows you to switch from cloud processing to a local engine and carry on dictating. You can't do that with most other tools.
If you are looking for a capable dictation assistant that actually works offline, I can highly recommend giving Amical a try.

Some Accuracy Issues
I used Amical intensively for about a week for my academic research and ultimately had to return it. I often dictate long, detailed notes from video observations, and that is where the tool consistently broke down for me. Sometimes it would start transcribing, capture the first word correctly, and then repeat that same word dozens of times while losing the rest of the content. Other times, the transcript would suddenly fill with random numbers, and my actual dictation disappeared. My internet is solid, but I also experienced occasional “transcription unsuccessful” errors, which forced me to go back into the app and retry recordings manually.
To its credit, when it worked, Amical was fast and generally accurate, and I can see why many users have positive things to say about it. The app is also nice and clean. However, because I rely on long, uninterrupted and reliable transcriptions for qualitative research, these glitches were deal‑breakers. In the end, I returned Amical and continued using Wispr instead, which has been more dependable for my workflow.

Jun 11, 2026Hi Elvis,
Really sorry about the experience here. This is definitely not expected, especially the repeated words, random numbers, and failed transcription errors you mentioned.
We’d really appreciate it if you could reach out to us at [email protected] or through our Discord at https://amical.ai/community , so we can look into what went wrong in your case. Long, uninterrupted dictation should work...

Better than Wisprflow app!
I found about Amical on YouTube and then came to Appsumo and tried the app. I would be lying if I said I was not very surprised by how good it is. I just stopped my Wisprflow plan and bought Amical. Their Mac app is as good as Wisprflow and now I am using Amical Android app right now and it is even better than Wisprflow! It is worth every penny. I won twice today. I got to not have to pay monthly plan fees and got a better app! I am happy with my decision so far!
