I don't think stating the AppSumo deal as a 0 risk way of trying Soundpiece is fair. As much as that is seriously cool feature of AppSumo, it is down to your company to give people a way to try it without signing up (or otherwise state there is no way to try it).
What puts me off is that I don't think this approach will work for subscribers at all, and that will limit the lifespan of the app. It also suggests there is not enough confidence is showing the app as it is and letting it 'speak for itself'.
Have you ever looked into the ProductLed approach? I would strongly recommend it.
In the meantime, is there any chance you can provide a way to test the app that does not require purchase here (which I feel goes against the aim of the refund policy) and without giving credit card details?
A: Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback. The reason for the approach is that there is a cost to us of creating songs. With the AppSumo deal users can test soundpiece for 2 months with a full money-back guarantee. I do hear your comments and will look into further ways to give users a chance to try soundpiece.

Q: I am interested in using Soundpiece as a replacement for AIVA when my subscription to that product expires.
I am subscribed to the Pro plan which means I own the copyright to the music I produce.
I know you have already answered a number of similar questions regarding the user license but perhaps that is because it is rather confusing.
I would like to publish the music I produce with Soundpiece via various streaming services such as Spotify. The license agreement says this is prohibited. However, you seem to have said that it is allowed if the licensee modifies the composition.
The bottom line is: I need clear guidance on what I need to do to any compositions produced in Soundpiece in order to publish them to streaming outlets without breaching the terms of use.
For example, if I were to use a music production app to create an original melody and mix it with the Soundpiece-generated composition, would this allow me legitimately to publish the end result to services such as Spotify?
The simplest way to explain it is that as long as the new mixed song (using parts of what soundpiece generates and mixing it together with your own melody) sounds like a different / new song, then that will be fine to publish on Spotify.
The only limitation is if you don't make any changes to the original soundpiece generated song, then you can't claim full copyright on that.
If you, however, make changes or incorporate it into a larger song and the new song sounds different, then you will be fine to publish it.
We are working on new features to make the copyright easier to understand and manage in future.
You can use songs as part of videos in your monitized youtube channel. What is limited is that the copyright of the generated songs belong to soundpiece but you won't ever be required to pay royalties and can use the generated music royalty free. If you, however, change the generated songs or use it as part of your own original composition then you will own the copyright of the new song.
Q: I used to have a license for AIVA and currently use the Orb Producer plugin.
So I was always going to pick this up when I found it!
Couple of quick questions/thoughts:
-Licensing terms seem a lot more restrictive than the two named above. I have read that this may change in the future, but until then, if I do not edit the music am I still able to use the composition in work done for a client (music for an ad, background music in a video, music in the background of a social media post)? Or would I need to make it part of a composition?
-What classes as part of a wider composition by your terms? This isn't clear in the EULA. I usually used AIVA for the chord progression ideas and sometimes the melody or rhythm of some of the instruments. But it was usually the starting point and I used Band in a Box, Captain Plugins and other software to complete the track. However, if I liked the track as a whole, would adding a lyrics and a vocal be enough to class as a wider composition or would I need to go as far as adding additional elements to the backing track?
-Are there plans to allow options to choose a key? I would like the option to choose a chord progression as well, but I recognise that would likely be even harder!
-I always liked the screen in AIVA which allowed direct editing of the generated song and displayed the chord progression. Is something like this in the VST? If not, that's no issue because I could just take the midi file into my DAW.
I have been impressed with the quality of the compositions so far. When I first got AIVA it produced about 1 in 5 or so that were usable, this did improve significantly over time. I'd say this seems to be better than 1 in 5, which is very impressive at this stage of development. I look forward to seeing how this improves.
A: Hi Richard, thanks for your great questions and feedback!
To answer your questions:
- Licensing terms: Yes, you can absolutely use the music as background music for clients without having to change it. There will be no royalty charges on the songs.
- What classes as part of a wider composition: As long as the new song sounds like a different/unique song compared to the original one soundpiece created, that should be enough. So, adding lyrics and vocals can work. Including additional instruments or changing some of the sounds and effects using the midi files will also work.
- Options to choose a key. At the moment in the browser version there is the option to select between major / minor keys and we are adding more key functionality in future. Using the inspire plugin, you will have more granular control of the key.
- Editing screen: Currently, we try to keep the UI really simple and easy to use and give users flexibility by allowing them to download the midi files to edit in their own DAW if they want more control. We are, however, working on added editing functionality in the browser version of soundpiece.
Thank you for your reply. Really helpful and has resolved any of the concerns I had over the licensing. I will definitely be checking out the plugin subscription moving forward.
Q: Would it be possible to generate tracks to use as background music for videos?
For example, can we create background music for videos where we are advertising or promoting a product?
Q: Do you have Data Scientists and/or technically focused Musicians collaborating to make the algorithms better?
I will caveat the examples you have on the site and YouTube are a year or older; therefore, I assume the engine is qualitatively better?
I'd be interested in purchasing this now with the hopes that in a year or two this could be the music equivalent of MidJourney, dall e 2, StableDiffusion, etc.
A: Hi LaMont. Thanks for your question. Yes in the soundpiece team we have Data Scientists actively working on improving the algorithms and generated music with regular improvements made to the product over time.
A: Hi shellspt, thanks for your question. It means you can download up to 50 songs (in either audio or midi file format) each day. Each song you download will equal 1 credit.
Q: Hi, in your Founder Post, you write:
==========
“The following is prohibited with respect to music generated by SOUNDPIECE:
….
- Reselling or distributing music to music streaming platforms such as Spotify, YouTube music channel, Apple Music, SoundCloud... etc.” ==========
But then in some of the answers here you write that the music generated on Soundpiece can be used in YouTube videos for example, as a kind of music track. (As long as no copyright claims are made on the Youtuber’s part).
Yes your understanding is correct. You can use the music generated on soundpiece for example as background music to your YouTube video. What you can’t do is claim copyrights to the generated songs (unless you change the songs or use them as part of a larger original composition) but you are free to use the generated songs for commercial applications without ever having to pay any royalties for using the music.
I would like to further clarify my question: can the songs generated by Soundpiece be used as music in projects such as YouTube videos which are basically songs and song compilations, as long as no copyrights are claimed?
The way our algorithms work means it is extremely, extremely unlikely to create the same music sequence.
In terms of copyright - Soundpiece owns the copyrights but you won't be required to pay soundpiece any royalties to use the generated songs once downloaded. If you, however, for example download the midi files and change the song (in a regular DAW) or incorporate any of our audio loops into a larger original music composition, then you will own the rights.
In order for you to own the copyright of songs originally generated by soundpiece, you will need to change the songs sufficiently so that when people listen to your new song, they don't think it is the same song as the original. It is difficult to give an exact rule of how much a song needs to change but by changing some of the notes or rhythms or the audio sounds used or incorporating it into a larger original song should sufficiently change it so that it sounds like a different song.
Q: Oh, and forgot to ask, when you extend the duration of a song, does the system simply loop the original ...
snippet until it achieves the new length? Or does it add variety and new parts in order to achieve that? Thanks
A: Hi Amirtyz, thanks for your question. At the moment it reuses similar sounds and material to increase the length but we are working on features to add more variety as users extend songs.
Hi RR. At the moment you can adjust a song up until 5 minutes.
Q: How does this compare to Infinitunes?
Also, how much of a change to the original piece of music needs to be done in order to claim ownership of it? How would I mark my new music piece with my own copyright?
I’m not familiar with them so can’t fully comment but a quick scan of their website looks like users have to combine their songs with videos in order to download it, there are differences in how and where you can use the songs, with soundpiece you get access to the raw music files as well which you can then edit and there seems to be differences in what the music sounds like and how it is generated.
In terms of copyrights.

2- Yes, you’ll be able to use the music for those commercial applications. The copyrights for the generated music will be owned by soundpiece but you will not be required to pay soundpiece any royalties to use the generated songs once downloaded. You stated in one of your comments that with your application, it is extremely, extremely likely to produce the same song or beat.
1. If that is the case, why are we prohibited from owning or making money off of our outputs? Like selling the generated outputs as-is. 2. As a musician, can I use the beats without making any changes? 3. Can I use the outputs on my YouTube channel for background music or meditation? 4. Where can I use the outputs and where cannot I? 5. Are there any additional use-case restrictions I should be aware of?
A: Hi LTD, thanks for your detailed questions and comments!
Regarding 1 & 2 - We are looking at how we can extend copyrights to give further flexibility as a future feature (https://soundpiece.canny.io/soundpiece-features).
